The Asyut Project (14). Eichner, Ina. . Deutsch. 2020. 152 S. Abb. 24,0 x 17,0 cm. EUR 54,00. ISBN: 978-3-447-11457-8 Harrassowitz Verlag
The Sanctuary of Artemis Soteira in the Kerameikos of Athens. Philippika (136). Graml, Constanze. Englisch. 2020. 350 S. 8 attachments, 65 plates. 29,7 x 21,0 cm. EUR 128,00. ISBN: 978-3-447-11286-4 Harrassowitz Verlag
In 1890, a newly discovered sanctuary was excavated in the necropolis on the famous Kerameikos of Athens. Guided by the ancient written sources and the expectations of his day, the excavator Kyriakos Mylonas interpreted the precinct as an Imperial Roman sanctuary of the goddess Hekate. In ancient texts, this deity is commonly associated with magical rituals and binding spells, and lead tablets used for such purposes have been found in graves all over the Greek world, including those of the Kerameikos necropolis. Due to the location of the sanctuary among the tombs and Mylonas’ interpretation of the site as belonging to this striking deity, researchers came to treat it as an unambiguously attested cult place of Hekate, even though the archaeological discoveries had not yet been fully published.
This volume is dedicated to this task. By conducting an in-depth analysis of the site’s entangled excavation and research history together with a new investigation of the actual archaeological findings, Constanze Graml not only re-dates the district to the Hellenistic period, but also reassigns it to the goddess Artemis Soteira. Based on these results, the sanctuary’s embedding and role in the cult topography of Athens and Attica can finally be seen in new light.
Stratigraphic and Ceramic Sequences. Materiali e Studi Archeologici di Ebla (10). Vacca, Agnese. The Early Bronze Age III and IVA1 at Tell Mardikh/Ebla and Its Region. Englisch. 2020. 352 S. Abb. 29,7 x 21,0 cm. EUR 178,00. ISBN: 978-3-447-11046-4 Harrassowitz Verlag
The site of Tell Mardikh, ancient Ebla, in north inner Syria, had three periods of flourishing: in Early Bronze IVA, the age of the State Archives, Early Bronze IVB and Middle Bronze I–II, between ca. 2400 and 1600 BC. The volume by Agnese Vacca explores the phases of formation of this great urban culture between ca. 2750/2700 and 2450 BC (EB III–IVA1) by means of an accurate and in-depth analysis of stratigraphy, architecture, ceramic materials and small finds.
The analysis was carried out in part on the field, but it is also the brilliant result of a painstaking work of study of excavation records and files from the archives of the Ebla Excavation, which allowed the author to collect consistent evidence from individual buildings – like Building G2 and Building G5 – and to relate it with scattered evidence from other sectors of the town, leading to the reconstruction of a coherent picture of pre-Palace G phases. As concerns specifically the ceramic repertory, Vacca, starting with the evidence from Ebla, enlarges her analysis, singling out a specific pottery horizon of the Ebla region, whose relations with other contemporary assemblages in the Northern Levant are presented in detail. The resulting picture from Ebla and its region has been related with the contemporary evidence from the Northern Levant and Upper Mesopotamia and has been framed in the general background of the process of state formation in this very important region of the ancient Near East.
The Discourse between Tomb and Temple. Königtum, Staat und Gesellschaft frĂŒher Hochkulturen (3,6). Hrsg.: Coppens, Filip; VymazalovĂĄ, Hana. 11. Ägyptologische Tempeltagung. Englisch. 2020. 332 S. Abb.. 24,0 x 17,0 cm. EUR 68,00. ISBN: 978-3-447-11429-5 Harrassowitz Verlag
This volume of the book series Königtum, Staat und Gesellschaft frĂŒher Hochkulturen contains the proceedings of the eleventh international conference dedicated to the ancient Egyptian temple in all its aspects, which was hosted by the Czech Institute of Egyptology, Faculty of Arts, Charles University in Prague in May 2017. The main theme of the meeting, the “Discourse between Tomb and Temple” revolved around the many diverse types of interaction that existed between two crucial and tangible expressions of ancient Egyptian thought, belief and culture. Ranging from the Old Kingdom to the era of Roman presence, the fourteen papers in this volume present, analyse and interpret evidence expressed in art, architecture, language, ritual, funerary and other practices, with a spotlight on relations, connections and exchanges between temple and tomb and its development and changing nature over time. This includes topics related to the transmission and exchange of specific textual corpora in addition to individual texts, decorative patterns or architectural elements as well as the interchangeability of rituals. Overall, the papers indicate incontestable distinctions between tomb and temple as well as substantial commonalities. These various forms of exchanges and interactions are moreover not static, but appear to develop and intensify over time, especially from the era of the New Kingdom onward.
BeitrĂ€ge des Festkolloquiums zu Ehren des 65. Geburtstages von Blagoje Govedarica. Kolloquien zur Vor- und FrĂŒhgeschichte (25). Hrsg.: Hansen, Svend. ReprĂ€sentationen der Macht. Deutsch; Englisch. 2020. 220 S. Abb.. 29,7 x 21,0 cm. EUR 68,00. ISBN: 978-3-447-11346-5 Harrassowitz Verlag
Accounts and Bookkeeping in the Ancient World. Philippika (55,2). Hrsg.: Jördens, Andrea; Yiftach, Uri. Legal Documents in Ancient Societies. Englisch. 2020. 324 S. Abb.. 24,0 x 17,0 cm. EUR 68,00. ISBN: 978-3-447-11198-0 Harrassowitz Verlag
Volume 55,2 presents the contributions of the eighth meeting of the Working Group “Legal Documents in Ancient Societies”, which was devoted to the topic “Accounts and Bookkeeping in the Ancient World”. The volume is dedicated to an early and seemingly ubiquitous type of text, which often followed certain classification criteria and which, for the sake of easier clarity, was gladly subjected to a specially developed layout. In addition to the discussions of individual artefacts or artefact groups as well as literary texts, there are considerations of ancient and modern terminology, the choice of writing media used for this purpose, the bodies entrusted with data collection, the purposes pursued with it, the further processing and archiving of the collected data as well as their organisation at the various levels of administration.
The examples from Emar and early Greece again show that a written version was by no means self-evident. The contributions not only draw attention once again to the high level of knowledge that can be gained from such a comparative approach, but also to the great potential of the always underestimated and only seemingly unattractive format of lists and directories. This undoubtedly applies to the entire field of economic administration, but also to questions of military affairs, demography, and sociology, for whose research this serial material is of importance that should not be underestimated.
Acts of the 7th International Fayoum Symposium. 29 October–3 November 2018 in Cairo and the Fayoum. Hrsg.: Römer, Cornelia E.. News from Texts and Archaeology. Englisch. 2020. 206 S. Abb.. 24,0 x 17,0 cm. EUR 58,00. ISBN: 978-3-447-11396-0 Harrassowitz Verlag
News from Texts and Archaeology, edited by Cornelia E. Römer, contains twelve of the important papers given at the 7th Fayoum Symposium in Cairo in October/November 2018, most of them dealing with archaeology, some with texts. They mirror the focus of this 7th Symposium, which for the first time took place in Egypt, and which highlighted the archaeological work recently carried out in the Graeco-Roman Fayoum by Egyptian and international missions. Papers include a presentation of the first Hellenistic gymnasium archaeologically attested in Egypt and excavated by the German Archaeological Institute in Cairo, and a catalogue of the Hellenistic and Roman sculptures which come from a secure provenance in the oasis. One paper traces the history of the water-wheel in Egypt, an invention that changed the landscape radically, and shows the sophistication of water supply in the villages in general. Together with the papers on Greek and Demotic texts found in the Fayoum, they all draw a picture of the multi-cultural society of the Egyptian countryside in the Graeco-Roman period. Of special interest are the three maps attached to the volume as an extra, which show the changing levels of the lake in the north of the oasis through the pharaonic and Ptolemaic/Roman periods.
Proceedings of a Conference Held at Marburg in Honour of Christopher J. Tuplin, December 1–2, 2017. Classica et Orientalia (22). Hrsg.: Jacobs, Bruno. Ancient Information on Persia Re-assessed: Xenophon’s Cyropaedia. Englisch. 2020. 408 S. Abb.. 24,0 x 17,0 cm. EUR 98,00. ISBN: 978-3-447-11283-3 Harrassowitz Verlag
In the past Xenophon’s Cyropaedia has attracted the attention of scholars primarily for literary-historical reasons. It is one of the main tasks of the present publication to free discussion of the work from this relatively narrow disciplinary constraint.
As questions of genre cannot be ignored anyway, the volume opens with contributions that consider where Cyropaedia stands in relation to historiography, the novel and Socratic literature. The next group of studies deals with how Xenophon drew on material from other authors and from his own experience to develop a picture of the emergence of the Persian Empire and of the way in which power was exercised there. Investigations of this sort presuppose questions about the historië that underpins Cyropaedia, and that topic is the focus of two further contributions that deal specifically with the types of information that were available to Xenophon. A final group of contributions looks at the impact of the work in canonical and deuterocanonical books of the Old Testament, in the writings of the Alexander historians and in modern literature up to the 18th century.
Zentren der Ideen – Zentren der Buchproduktion. WolfenbĂŒtteler Schriften zur Geschichte des Buchwesens (51). Hrsg.: Seidler, Andrea; Monok, IstvĂĄn. Reformation und BĂŒcher. Deutsch. 2020. 232 S. 19 s/w Abb., 5 Schemata. 24,0 x 16,0 cm. EUR 68,00. ISBN: 978-3-447-11271-0 Harrassowitz Verlag
K?rbk Stream Basin. Settlement History of Iraqi Kurdistan (4). Koli?ski, Rafa?. Catalogue of Archaeological Sites. Navk?r Plain. Englisch. 2020. 592 S. 472 ill., 6 maps, 304 tables. 29,7 x 21,0 cm. EUR 174,00. ISBN: 978-3-447-19986-5 Harrassowitz Verlag
The series presents the results of research carried out in the Iraqi Kurdistan from 2012 through 2017. During this time, an extremely rich group of heritage monuments was registered on an area of 3058 km2 located on both banks of the Greater Zab, at the foot of the Kurdistan mountains. More than 300 archaeological sites, 4 rock reliefs, nearly 80 cultural heritage monuments (cemeteries, Christian, Muslim and Jewish architecture, industrial installations) and over 100 caves illustrate nearly 10.000 years of the region`s history, from the Neolithic period to the mid-20th century AD. The SHIK will consist of two introductory volumes (an atlas and a volume on the project`s methodology), eight volumes presenting the dataset for settlement sites (six volumes), caves and heritage monuments (one volume each), and a volume analyzing the development of the settlement during particular periods.
The second volume of the site catalogue contains a complete dataset for 34 archaeological sites documented in 2013, 2014, and 2015 on a stretch of land connecting the Navkūr Plain and the Greater Zab river valley along the Kārbk stream. The flat area between the Sart mountains in the north and the Zark Bardaṟaş hills in the south, up to 10 km in width, offers very good conditions for travel in the east-west direction, and was used by the King Road of the Persian period, if not earlier. Additionally, the volume contains an analysis of relevant images of U2 and CORONA spy missions and contemporary satellite imagery, a discussion of relevant maps from the Atlas of Archaeological Sites in Iraq, and indexes.

Die Autoren sind anerkannte Forscher der Buchwissenschaft, der Philologien, der Geschichts- und Sozialwissenschaften aus Deutschland, USA, Frankreich und Argentinien.
Writing World History in Late Ming China and the Perception of Maritime Asia. East Asian Economic and Socio-cultural Studies - East Asian Maritime History (15). Papelitzky, Elke. Englisch. 2020. 240 S. 10 ill., 2 diagrams, 4 maps, 36 tables. 24,0 x 17,0 cm. EUR 58,00. ISBN: 978-3-447-11309-0 Harrassowitz Verlag
The last century of China`s Ming dynasty (1368–1644) saw many troubles and challenges from abroad. Pirates raided the coast, Europeans challenged the traditional world order of the tribute system, and the everlasting threat from the northern steppe people continued to raise concerns for the state. This climate of uncertainty resulted in many Ming literati discussing foreign countries. During the last decades of the Ming, seven authors wrote monographs that can be considered a form of early Chinese “world history.” The authors describe the geography, the history, and the political systems of foreign countries and regions ranging from China`s close neighbors Japan and Mongolia to more distant lands such as Mogadishu and Europe.
This books by Elke Papelitzky studies each of the seven author`s knowledge and perception of the world and focuses especially on the countries connected with China at the maritime border: Siam, Malacca, and Portugal, combining a close textual and paratextual analysis with a biographical study to understand why the authors wrote the texts the way they did. This is the first comprehensive introduction to these texts contributing to an understanding of late Ming historiography as well as the perception of foreign countries by late Ming scholars.
The Northern Soldiers-Tomb (H11.1) at Asyut. The Asyut Project (13). Abdelrahiem, Mohamed. Englisch. 2020. 110 S. Abb. 24,0 x 17,0 cm. EUR 34,00. ISBN: 978-3-447-11431-8 Harrassowitz Verlag
Since 2003, the Egyptian-German team of The Asyut Project has been working on Gebel Asyut al-gharbi close to the modern city of Asyut. One of the areas investigated is a tomb known as Northern Soldiers-Tomb (H11.1) due to its painted decoration of marching warriors. The tomb has severely suffered from extensive quarrying activities in the past so that today only parts of the walls and the subterranean burial chambers are still preserved. The fieldwork conducted by The Asyut Project focussed on cleaning the inner hall and the shafts, consolidating the tomb`s decoration and preparing facsimiles as well as plans and sections of its architecture. Mohamed Abdelrahiem presents the results of these works in this volume of the Asyut Project series. He gives a thorough description of the tomb`s architecture and decoration, details its long research history and introduces a selection of finds that demonstrate the long-term usage of the Asyutian necropolis. Based on the evidence gained through his work, Mohamed Abdelrahiem is able to date the tomb and identify its owner. Furthermore, he highlights the tomb`s extensive re-use as a burial ground: constructed originally in late Dynasty 11, the Northern Soldiers-Tomb houses several shafts and small niches that contained remains of burial equipment from later periods, especially from the Middle Kingdom and Roman-Byzantine times.
Göttinger Orientforschungen, I. Reihe: Syriaca (57). Aktas, Musa. Die Christologie des Philoxenus von Mabbug. Syrisch; Deutsch. 2020. 674. S. 6 Tabellen. 24,0 x 17,0 cm. EUR 98,00. ISBN: 978-3-447-11427-1 Harrassowitz Verlag
Hrsg.: Bednarczuk, Monika. Deutsch. 2020. 252 S. 24,0 x 17,0 cm. EUR 68,00. ISBN: 978-3-447-11403-5 Harrassowitz Verlag
Continuity and Change in North Africa from the Byzantine to the Early Islamic Age. Papers of a Conference held in Rome, Museo Nazionale Romano – Terme di Diocleziano, 28 February – 2 March 2013. Palilia (34). Hrsg.: Bockmann, Ralf; Leone, Anna; von Rummel, Philipp. Africa – Ifriqiya. Englisch. 2020. 322 S. 62 ill., 8 maps, 6 tables. 29,7 x 21,0 cm. EUR 58,00. ISBN: 978-3-447-11333-5 Harrassowitz Verlag
â€čAfrica – Ifrīqiyaâ€ș is dedicated to the study of the transformational period that marked the end of Antiquity in the southern Mediterranean: the transition between east Roman, or Byzantine, and Arabic (and ultimately Islamic) rule over what eventu-ally came to be known as the Maghreb, the former territory of Roman North Africa. It brings together current research by internationally renowned experts from Europe, North Africa, Australia, and the USA who have contributed important work in recent years to the study of this period.
The sections in this book cover historical questions, the fields of religion and ur-banism, and developments in landscapes and the economy. A wide range of topics is discussed, including church building, the founding of early mosques, military history, and the ideology of political centres. A number of articles feature detailed presenta-tions and discussions of Arabic sources. Many of the contributions present recent archaeological research, making material evidence available for the post-Roman phases in a number of exemplary sites such as Carthage, Kairouan, Ammaedara, and Chimtou. Settlement topography and economic developments are analysed from broad perspectives, while regional studies focus on particular areas like the Tunisian Sahel and Tripolitania. Works on early Islamic coinage and pottery provide valuable information on the material culture of the transitional period.
Uniting interdisciplinary research and presenting new perspectives on the fasci-nating period between Antiquity and the early Islamic world, this volume furthers our understanding of how the transitional process played out on the ground in North Africa. Its contributions help to illuminate how (post-)Roman Africa slowly trans-formed into a new world of changing communities, diversified religious affiliations and new connections across the Mediterranean.
