Studia in memoriam Octaviani Bounegru. Philippika (155). Herausgegeben von Mihailescu-Bîrliba, Lucre?iu; Dumitrache, Iulia. Persevera lucere. Englisch. 2021. 360 S. 68 ill., 2 tables, 30 plates. 24 x 17 cm . EUR 98,00 . ISBN: 978-3-447-39200-6 Harrassowitz Verlag
Octavian Bounegru (1956-2019) was an important Romanian historian and archaeologist. His books and studies focus on Roman economic and social history, Early and Late Roman archaeology. He has lead excavations in Histria and Halmyris (Moesia Inferior, Scythia, Romania), with spectacular finds (among them, the martyrion of Halmyris). Octavian Bounegru was an Alexander-von-Humboldt fellow and constantly cooperated with German colleagues, but he had scientific connections all over the world.
This volume dedicated by his former students, colleagues and friends contains studies in economic and social history, archaeology and history of archaeology, epigraphy and papyrology, numismatics and sigillography. In his honor, the authors published new documents, put new archaeological evidences into circulation and reevaluate historical issues.
Changing Clusters and Migration in the Near Eastern Bronze Age. Collected Papers of a Workshop held in Vienna 4th?6th of December 2019. Contributions to the Archaeology of Egypt, Nubia and the Levant (12). Herausgegeben von Bietak, Manfred; Herausgegeben von Prell, Silvia. The Enigma of the Hyksos Volume IV. Englisch. 2021. 552 S. 256 figures, 18 tables. 29,7 x 21 cm . EUR 138,00 . ISBN: 978-3-447-39226-6 Harrassowitz Verlag
The volume comprises the collected papers of a workshop titled „Changing Clusters and Migration in the Near Eastern Bronze Age“ (Vienna, December 2019), organised by the ERC Advanced Grant „The Enigma of the Hyksos“.
During the second half of the 12th Dynasty, Egypt confronted an influx of foreigners settling in the Eastern Nile Delta. Potentially linked to this migration was the subsequent ad interim rule of two foreign dynasties (14th and 15th Dynasties) over Northern Egypt. Information about the exact origin of the Near Easterners responsible for the rise of Hyksos rule is sparse and several questions regarding the Hyksos and their predecessors still require further investigation, including: their exact geographical origin, the degree of their cultural and ethnic homogeneity, the reasons for their migration to Egypt, the means by which they assumed political control and the extent to which they maintained ties to their places of origin.
For these questions to be explored, several multi-disciplinary analyses ensued from various contexts across Mesopotamia, the Levant, and Egypt prior to and during the so-called Hyksos Period. These include material cultural analyses, anthropological, cultural interference and migration studies, the analysis of settlement patterns and architecture, new onomastic studies, a new historiographical approach, and bioarchaeological analyses of physical remains. The variety of material now available, and so far, largely neglected in the scientific discussion, can finally be utilised as first rate historical resources.
Zusammenfassung der Ergebnisse. Schriften der Max Freiherr von Oppenheim-Stiftung (21). Meyer, Jan-Waalke. Tell Chuera 1958–2011. Deutsch. 2021. 428 S. 147 Abb., 126 Tafeln. 24,0 x 17,0 cm . EUR 89,00 . ISBN: 978-3-447-11738-8 Harrassowitz Verlag

The volume also contains several texts devoted to a wide range of political events and social and cultural issues of the ancient world and, in addition, contributions dealing with the reception and study of antiquity in Poland. La bóveda en la arquitectura maya. Forschungen zur Archäologie Außereuropäischer Kulturen (18). Sansalvador, Laura Gilabert. Spanisch. 2021. 172 S. 145 Abb., 14 tables. 29,7 x 21 cm. EUR 78,00. ISBN: 978-3-447-11693-0 Harrassowitz Verlag
With a building tradition that spans more than ten centuries, the vault is one of the most characteristic elements of Maya architecture. This system of stone masonry roofing, which is based on the principle of gradually increasing the proximity of stone courses, exhibits not only the continuity of construction techniques in this ancient civilisation but also the differences in technological evolution that occurred between the different regions of the Maya Lowlands.
This work approaches the study of the Maya vault by recording and analysing an extensive sample of cases from different geographical areas and chronological periods. The information obtained from fieldwork, complemented by bibliographical sources, has been registered in the digital Catalogue of Maya Vaults, which allows the archiving, analysis, and comparison of all vault characteristics. The analysis of this corpus of vaults is approached from an architectural point of view that considers a variety of aspects such as form, geometry, function, symbolism, and the construction characteristics of the vaulted space, which leads to the proposal of a general classification of the Maya vault according to several criteria.
Through a comparative study of the sample, the characteristic features and particularities of the vaults of various geographical areas have been identified, and their evolution over time has been analysed, which allows us to formulate hypotheses about the historical relationships between the different regions and the possible transfers of construction knowledge. Finally, the deterioration processes affecting vaulted buildings are analysed, and general criteria for the excavation, conservation, and restoration of this architectural heritage are proposed.
