25 Years Have Passed. Grave - Man - Environment. Jaeger, Mateusz; Tomczyk, Jacek; Wrzesiski, Jacek. Englisch. 2026. 456 S. 205 ill., 27 tabels. EUR 98,00. ISBN: 978-3-447-39825-1 Harrassowitz Verlag
„25 Years Have Passed“ represents another volume in the Funeralia-series, which is the result of many years of academic conferences devoted to the study of humans, their environment, and funerary practices. This publication in particular is the outcome of the 25th conference, which was attended by archaeologists, physical anthropologists, historians, and representatives of numerous other disciplines whose shared field of research is death and its cultural contexts. The book as a whole is distinctly interdisciplinary in character, combining archaeological evidence with biological, environmental, and cultural perspectives. The collected contributions offer a wide-ranging exploration of key research problems: from transformations of funerary practices in prehistory, through the social and symbolic meanings of burial sites, to the application of modern analytical methods such as isotopic studies and digital documentation of human remains. Particular attention is given to case studies, which illuminate the relationships between humans and their environment, as well as the complexity of social and cultural bonds. The volume thus represents not only a collection of individual studies but also a dynamic and multifaceted reflection on the past, in which death becomes a starting point for reconstructing the lives, practices, and worldviews of past communities.

In 1999, an American team began excavation of an Early Iron Age burial mound in the “Speckhau” tumulus group near the internationally renowned Heuneburg hillfort on the upper Danube River in Baden-Württemberg as part of a research initiative focused on Early Iron Age mortuary practices. The results of three field seasons of excavation by the “Landscape of Ancestors” project in two 20-meter diameter burial mounds are presented in this publication. There are hundreds of burial mounds in the vicinity of the Heuneburg, but until the “Landscape of Ancestors” project, no systematic investigations had been conducted in mounds under 50 meters in diameter. Such mounds provide an important source of information about how society was organized at a critical time in the evolution of social complexity in the region, which was increasingly connected with cultural developments in other areas of Europe. The project produced the first evidence for Early Iron Age mortuary activity predating the founding of the Heuneburg, beginning ca. 700 BCE and extending well into La Tène A.
Post-excavation innovations in materials analysis included the first use of CT-scan technology in the examination of fragile metal and organic grave goods that revealed previously unknown details of the technology used in manufacturing personal ornament and weapons as well as their precise placement in the grave. Other innovations included 3-D reconstruction of ceramic vessels to facilitate scientific analysis and visualization.
The material culture recovered from 21 inhumation graves links the “Speckhau” population with northern Italy, Britain and the Iberian Peninsula, indicating that such external connections were not limited to the elites in central chambers in the better-known mega-mounds of the region. This volume contributes to an ongoing reimagining of the Early Iron Age cemetery as a place of multiscalar activities with remarkably diverse individual and group expressions and materialities.

The Levites in the book of Deuteronomy are portrayed in the cultic and social spheres of Israel. According to the prevailing interpretation of Israel`s cultic development, especially in the wake of cultic centralization, the Levites transitioned from their roles as local high place priests to that of the locally unemployed and impoverished. Utilizing ritual, sociological and anthropological criticism, and drawing from the portrayal of the Levites in and outside of Deuteronomy, James Douglas Wilson`s study considers an alternative perspective on roles and functions of the Levites within Israel`s gates. Its purpose is to demonstrate that these “rural” Levites did not entirely lose their local cultic roles, but that they may have been responsible for performing several social-level tasks which corresponded to their cultic roles based on their permanent duties in the sanctuary and their overall function as socio-cultic mediators and ritual specialists. Their roles are generally described in the Old Testament as “guard duty” and “manual labor,” but more specifically it is asserted here that the rural Levites performed local scribal duties associated with the triennial tithe and legal cases and performed ritual duties related to local meat consumption.
